Hooray! You’re here! I hope you had a wonderful summer. My name is Mrs. Ashley Watts and I will be your child’s 8th grade English Language Arts teacher. I look forward to an excellent year with your awesome kids!
A little about me:
I was a 12 year senior here in Medical Lake and attended EWU for my BA in secondary English education. GO EAGS! I have a great husband and a son that is about to turn 5! I also have a boxer mix, so if you are a fellow boxer family I look forward to discussing these fun, weird dogs :). I enjoy cross-stitching, yoga, and baking when I do not have my teacher or mom hat on.
Exciting things are happening in Language Arts. The district recently adopted a new curriculum called Study Sync. Students will have access to Study Sync via their school-issued Chromebook and in a physical copy that will be kept in the classroom. This curriculum is aligned with state standards, which we use to pace our teaching to ensure we cover all areas students will need to succeed as they progress through school. You can access the Common Core State Standards by Googling (or Bing-ing if you’re a rebel) CCSS + 8th grade writing. The year is broken up into 3 big papers that are turned in as a portfolio that will include prewrites, outlines, research notes, first (maybe even second) drafts, and their final copy. Along with their papers, we will have activities in-class that focuses on skill-building, grammar, and structure.

To save some paper and your time I will outline instructions for how to access the above information via my teacher webpage on the right hand side under my photo.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or information that will help your child have a successful, empowering, enjoyable year!
