Overview

Welcome to 6th grade!  I am excited to get another year started. The following pages are designed to help navigate this class. Please click on the links to the left for more options.

Course Description:  In this class we will be working on a wide variety of math skills using Open-Up

resources from Illustrative Math. The units are organized in the following way:

Quarter 1 (or quarter 2 if you are in periods 4 or 5)

Area and Surface Area.  (unit 1)

(State Standard: Geometry- Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area,

and volume.)

Introducing Ratios, Unit Rates and Percentages. (Units 2-3)

(State Standard Ratios & Proportional Relationships standard- Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.)

Dividing Fractions. (Unit 4)

(State Standard: Number Systems-  Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and

division to divide fractions by fractions.)

Quarter 3 (or quarter 4 if you are in periods 4 or 5)

Arithmetic in Base Ten.  (Unit 5)

(State Standard :Number System- Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors

and multiples.)

Expressions and Equations. (Unit 6)

(State Standard: Expressions and Euations- Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to

algebraic expressions.)

Rational Numbers. (Unit 7)

(State Standard: Number Systems-  Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system

of rational numbers.)

Data Sets and Distributions. (Unit 8)

(State Standard: Statistics & Probability- Develop understanding of statistical variability.)

In general, it is crucial that students check in daily for instruction and  daily tasks.  They will

also have unit end assessment to measure their understanding.  It is my goal to have  every

student  score of 3 on each one of my unit assessments to demonstrate their grade level

competency.   If a student does not score at least a 3 the first time, they will be expected to

correct their original test, demonstrate an effort to learn the material and then schedule a

time on their own to retake their test.   It is my goal to have every student find success and

master 6th grade math material.

Access Time/ extra support:

Students will have access to additional individualized help time.  If a student does not

understand different concepts, I urge them to get help as soon as possible.  There will be

daily time where students can ask for help.  If you or your student find any of the content

confusing please do not hesitate to contact me.   It is my goal to communicate with parents

in a variety of ways.  If there is anything that I should know to better help your student, please

let me know.  If there are any special circumstances, or if you have any questions or concerns,

I urge you to contact me at [email protected] or call my classroom at (509) 565-3342.
